Programme Profile and Academic Orientation

The Master of Laws is designed as a specialised legal master's degree that enables in-depth academic engagement with key areas of commercial and corporate law. The programme is aimed at lawyers and individuals with relevant professional qualifications who wish to systematically expand their legal expertise at master's level while also deepening their practical application. The focus is on the ability to analyse complex legal issues precisely, argue in a structured manner and classify legal solutions in economic, institutional and regulatory contexts.

In terms of content, the LL.M. combines a solid methodological foundation with targeted specialisation. A compulsory methodology module introduces students to legal research methodology, academic work and the analysis and structuring of legal arguments. Building on this, the programme provides in-depth knowledge in key areas of European and national commercial law, in particular contract and liability law, corporate law and EU law. This core is supplemented by freely selectable specialisation modules that allow students to develop their own individual professional profile in areas such as competition law, intellectual property law, labour law, tax law or capital market law.

The LL.M. is explicitly designed as an academic degree with a clear practical focus. Legal issues are not dealt with in isolation and in the abstract, but are always analysed in the context of real case scenarios, economic decision-making processes and regulatory frameworks. This enables students to acquire the ability to make informed assessments of legal risks, scope for action and compliance requirements, and to prepare legal arguments tailored to the target audience.

The Master's thesis forms the academic conclusion of the programme and is designed as an independent piece of legal research. It enables students to engage in an in-depth examination of a clearly defined legal issue using the methodological tools they have learned during their studies. With the appropriate choice of topic, the Master's thesis can already be designed as a conceptual or analytical foundation paper, which can be further developed and deepened when entering a DBA or PhD programme at a later date. The LL.M. thus not only opens up a qualified legal specialisation at Master's level, but can also be used specifically as a preparatory stage for further academic qualification.
