Programme Profile and Academic Orientation

The Master of Arts in Politics is designed as a research-oriented social science master's degree at EQF level 7. The programme is dedicated to the in-depth analysis of contemporary political orders, conflicts and transformation processes in national, transnational and global contexts. The focus is not on short-term policy-oriented solutions, but on the theory-driven and methodologically reflective examination of political power relations, institutions, ideologies and discourses.

In terms of content, the programme combines political theory, political economy, history of ideas, global politics and international law with interdisciplinary perspectives from philosophy, sociology, history, cultural studies and religious studies. Political phenomena are not viewed in isolation, but analysed in terms of their historical, epistemological and normative prerequisites. Topics such as globalisation, colonialism, nationalism, market mechanisms, biopolitics, race, religion, gender, justice, freedom and equality form central axes of analysis.

The Master's programme in Politics is explicitly designed as an academic programme with a strong research focus. Students acquire in-depth skills in the critical handling of complex specialist literature, in the systematic reconstruction of theoretical positions and in the development of independent questions. Particular emphasis is placed on the reflection of methodological approaches and the conscious selection of suitable theoretical and empirical instruments. The programme thus promotes not only knowledge of content, but also independent political science thinking and research skills.

The Master's thesis is the central component of the programme. It is designed as an independent piece of academic research and makes a clearly defined contribution to a field of political science. The thesis requires a combination of theoretical foundation, methodological coherence and argumentative rigour. With the appropriate choice of topic, the Master's thesis can be specifically designed as a basic research project that prepares students for a subsequent PhD programme. If the content of the thesis focuses on areas relevant to business administration, such as political economy, regulation, governance, organisational and institutional analysis or economic policy issues, a subsequent DBA programme is also possible. The Master of Arts in Politics is thus positioned as an academic qualification with clear connectivity to both research-oriented doctoral studies and practice-oriented doctoral studies, provided that the thematic focus supports this.

The master's program is divided into two consecutive study sections (tiers):
